I Had Forgotten....
I was so excited to set my plan in motion. Long movie = long nap. Then I remembered that today is early release for Red. Drat! Foiled again! I'll try for a nap tomorrow. I wouldn't need a nap if I didn't participate in the nightly routine of hacking up a lung... but I digress.
Baby Girl was going through some old videos looking for something to watch when her eyes landed on "The Little Mermaid". She's never seen it. I knew there was a reason I had never shown it to her, but in my sleep deprived state, I couldn't remember the reason. So, I popped it in our decrepit VCR. She was totally absorbed in the underwater world until...

That's right. Ursula. Has there ever been a creepier villainess in the Disney lineup? This is one bad girl and she scared the beejeebies out of Baby Girl as soon as she came on the screen. I watched my girl recoil in fear and in my mind flashed all of the nasty, horrible and downright scary scenes with Ursula in them.

"Hey, Baby Girl, should we watch something else?"

"Yeah. Let's watch the Bugs (Bugs Life)! That Mermaid movie was so cute. Turn it off... now!"

I LOVE Ursula.

Then again, I loved Nellie on Little House on the Prairie...

Aww. I think Cruella De Ville is scarier than Ursula, but really, Disney is filled with SCARY SCARY villians!

There are lots of scary charaters in Disney. One of my 3yr olds olves all movies and none are scary, but the other is scared of EVERYTHING! Got here from 2 kids and tired... nice to find other LDS moms to read abt their lives.

Oh dear. I had a similar experience showing Emma Chicken Little. What was I thinking?!

i never understood why disney puts such scary villians into their children's movies. i know a lot of moms who have to fast forward through specific parts of the movies. do you think that's what disney had in mind?

I hear ya. There are certain movies that my son will not watch because of the scary villians. He'll say, "I can't watch that movie because it freaks me out"

Loved Baby Girl's reaction. Ursula is a little creepy--and so is Hopper. One of little grandson's cried when Hopper dies--"Hopper was my friend".

I LOOOVE Ursula, and I love to impersonate her creepy voice: "I admit that in the past I've been a nasty..."

But hey, I'm old! She is definitely scary for little ones! :0

i love amber's comment!

boy, i had bad scary nightmares most of my life. maybe they started because of something like this. i know when i was little i was traumatized (for real, not joking) by an episode of "the brady bunch" where jesse james in a dream killed their whole family. FREAKED.ME.OUT for a long time.

anyway, i love disney movies even as an adult. they are way better than the stupid kid movies like "the tigger movie" and the "rugrats movie." those were torture to have to sit through with our kids when they were little.

cheers,
kathleen

It took a while of FF before Girlie Girl could watch Ursula. She even scared me when she got Triton's power and started growing huge!

Too funny, I know I'm always so behind in commenting, but here goes. My little one Sydni, loves Ursula. She says all her lines in the cutest of toddler voices. Cracks me up! I have yet to find anything that scares her in a movie.
I remember being freaked out by the Jesse James Brady Bunch as well, and funny enough we are watching "The Tigger Movie" right now. I actually really like it. I love Tigger.
